Where Are The Dead? 1 Thess. 4: 13 - 1813 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. I. Gen. 4: 1 All are born into this world. Just like Cain all are born. 1 ¶ And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. A. Children are born pure, without sin. 1. Matt. 19: 14 Jesus compares them to the Kingdom of heaven. 14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. 2. If a child dies in this pure state they go to Paradise.
B. James 1: 13 – 18 When one reaches the age of accountability, knowing right from wrong, they are accountable for their sins. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. C. 2 Thess. 1: 7 – 9 Living in sin, obeying not the gospel, one is lost. 7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 1. If one dies in this state they will be punished. 2. If on is in this state when Christ comes they will be cast into hell. “everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord,…” 3. Today the living can change that state by obeying Jesus Christ. D. Col. 1: 13 Paul thanking God writes…. 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
1. HOW ? a Matt. 6: 18 – 19 Jesus said unto Peter: 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. b. Acts 2: 38 When Peter finished his sermon they asked what they must do. 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 2. Acts 2: 41 Who has redemption? Luke records. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. a. Heb. 11: 6 One must have faith. b. Acts 17: 30 One must repent c. Rom. 10:10 One must confess Christ. d. Acts 2: 38 One must be baptized for the remission of sins.
E. 2 Peter 1: 5 – 11 One in Christ must grow. 5 ¶ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “ if you do these things you will never fall.” 1. Rev. 2: 10 faithful unto death. 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. 2. Matt. 25: 30 The unfaithful will be cast into hell. 30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. II. At Death The Soul Leaves the Body. A. The faithful soul and all infants souls go to paradise. B. The unfaithful soul goes to torment. C. Luke 16: 19 – 31 We find the rich man and Lazarus. 1. The rich man is in torment. 2. Lazarus in Abraham’s bosom. Luke 16: 19 19 ¶ There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. D. Luke 23: 43 Jesus told the thief on the cross 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
E. Acts 2; 27 Peter said David rejoiced because his soul would not be left in Hell, paradise. In Ver. 31 Peter says: 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. F. 2 Peter 2: 4 – 9 God spared not those that came before. 4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: G. Jude ver 6 the fallen angels were kept. 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. III. Matt. 25: 31 There Will Be a Final Judgment. 31 ¶ When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: A. John 5: 28 – 29 All will arise for the final judgment. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
B. 2 Cor. 5: 10 All must appear for that final judgment. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. The living are on this earth to prepare for eternity. The dead are in Hades, paradise or torment awaiting the final judgment. Heaven or Hell awaits us all. Where will you spend eternity?
